Sitting squarely in the strategic planning arena it forms a vital component of any organisation’s approach to strategic planning. Undoubtedly we all realise our strategic plan outlines where we are going and what it is we want to achieve over a period of time, usually several years. From this drops out our accompanying business plan, usually for a one-year period, which is often broken down into our operational areas. This maps out how we are going to get there, budgets, how we measure we have arrived and so on. However, failure to recognise that an organisation is actually one system comprising of smaller interacting subsystems within these planning phases may have unwanted results – sometimes catastrophic ones. Invariably changes in one aspect of an organisation impacts on the others. For example we may launch a marketing campaign that leads to a 100% increase in our clients within six months, if we haven’t thought about and planned for the required increase in our resources, where does that leave us?
What will happen if we can’t respond or deliver to our existing and new clients if their enquiries or orders are not actioned in an acceptable timeframe?
